Karva Chauth is one of the major
festivals of Hindus which is celebrated by the married women. They pray for the
long life of their husband by keeping a fast of Karva Chuath. It falls every
year in the month of October/November on the fourth day of dark fortnight of Ashwin.

day, women adorn bridal makeup and break their fast in the evening after
watching the moon. During this time, markets are occupied with traditional
items such as henna, stylish cloths and beauty stuff. In addition to this,
special eateries are also available in the market on demand.

incomplete without them. It is believed that these items bring good luck in the
life of married couple. Sargi consists of different types of food stuff and
cloths. According to the tradition, married women start the fast after eating
this sargi before the sunrise and then break their Karva Chuath vrat at night
after worshiping the moon. This fast is one of the toughest fast as women do
this fast without taking any food or water.
Baya is a gift which is given by
the mothers of married women to the parents of their son in law in the
afternoon. This gift item consists of Mathris, Almonds and other gift stuff.
This gift pack should be reached at the home of newlywed girl before evening.
Married girls pray to Gaura Maa or Goddess Parvati for the longevity and well
being of their husbands by performing their pooja. For this purpose, they place
a small pitcher or Karva which is filled with water in the center. Ladies
circulate their Baya thalis while narrating the story of Karva Chauth.
Puja Process of Karva Chauth
Married girls start the puja
preparations in advance. They decorate their hands and feet with heena and
prepare the pooja thali with sindoor, incense sticks and rice. The shringar and
other puja stuff including karwa, heena etc are the essential items. As per the
ritual, ladies gather at a common place in the late afternoon and hear the
story of Karva Chauth by an elderly women or pujarin. At the end, ladies offer
some fruits or food grains to the pujarin.
